USAF Col. (Ret.) Richard Allen Lund went to be with the Lord on Sept. 28, 2018. He was loved by many.
Born March 26, 1933, he was the eldest son of Mabel (Allen) Lund and Abel O. Lund of Grand Marais. He married the love of his life, Irene Emma Haas of Eschenbach, Germany in 1959. She preceded him in death in 2014.
He is survived by their three children, Rolf, Ellen and Cathrine; eight grandchildren (Jena Niehus, Brent Niehus, Kip Lund, Matthew Lund, Malia Niehus, Anna Lund, Maryrose Lund and Austin Pulley); brothers Robert and Ron Lund of Grand Marais; aunt Irene Peterson of Grand Marais; brother-in-law Helmut Haas of Rosenheim, Germany; and many beloved cousins and extended family.
From the boreal forest of northern Minnesota, Dick graduated from Cook County High School, class of 1951. He then went on to the University of Minnesota, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy. He was commissioned into the U.S. Air Force, where he proudly served in the Medical Service Corps for 30 years.
He lived a full, adventurous life. If we were to pick a word to describe our dad, it would be “integrity.” He has been a beacon to his family; his love and wisdom will forever live on in our hearts. His gentle and kind soul, wry wit, and easy smile will be sorely missed by all. In his final days he told us, “It’s been a good ride; I’ve had a wonderful life.” He left us peacefully, knowing how much he was loved
