Update on the drowning victim

The Cook County Sheriff ’s office has provided an update on the 29-year-old man who perished in Tuscarora Lake on May 19.

There were three people in the party and the prior evening, one of them was fishing from the shore. His line became snagged and they all went into the lake in their canoe to attempt to free the snag. The canoe capsized and somehow they became separated. Two of them were able to swim to shore but they lost sight of the victim, Billy Cameron, during this time.

The two survivors spent the night separated but were able to summon help from passing canoers the next day. All of them were wearing PFD’s. The water was extremely cold and at least one of them stated that he was losing feeling in his limbs as he was swimming towards shore.

The Midwest Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be drowning.
