Unsafe passing causes crash in Lutsen

A St. Paul man received a citation for unsafe passing after the vehicle he was driving collided with a turning vehicle in Lutsen last week.

Leslie Ann Pilgrim, 56, of Mendota Heights, Minnesota, was traveling west on Highway 61 in a silver Honda Pilot with three other people at about 10:39 a.m. on August 14. Pilgrim slowed and signaled to make a left turn from Highway 61 to County Road 34. A car driven by an unknown person was behind her and it slowed down.

Samuel Henry Hesse, 30, was traveling west in a white 2014 Ford F150 behind both vehicles and attempted to pass, colliding with Pilgrim’s vehicle and then hitting the guard rails.

Neither Hesse nor his passenger were injured and the occupants of Pilgrim’s car were also unharmed. All of the parties in the crash were wearing seatbelts.

Hesse’s pick-up received moderate damage to both sides. Pilgrim’s vehicle suffered moderate damage to the left side. Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Cook County Towing.

Minnesota State Patrol Trooper Leah Carpenter reminds motorists to take time when passing a slowing vehicle to find out what is ahead of them.
