The Cook County High School band has been busy—practicing marching for the Bayfield Apple Festival, playing at Pep Fests and sporting events—and now the band (and Band Director Keri Bilben, sitting in with the brass section at the Homecoming game) are teaming up with Barnes & Noble on a unique fundraiser.

The Cook County High School band has a fundraiser coming up in early November to help fund an upcoming band trip to Memphis and Orlando in March of 2012. There have already been several fundraisers and the community has been very generous in their support.

This fundraiser is a little different. Barnes and Noble booksellers gives schools and other not-for-profit organizations the opportunity to hold a book fair. On Nov. 5, several band members will be in the Barnes and Noble at the mall in Duluth handing out coupons to interested people. Each coupon brought to the checkout will allow 10 percent of that buyer’s receipt to go toward the band.

This counts for books, games, toys, music and food from Barnes and Noble coffee shop.

For those who don’t want to travel to Duluth, there is also a way to contribute online. From Nov. 5-9, go to bn.com/bookfair and use the band’s coupon number to get the same 10 percent benefit for the band. You do not donate anything yourself—10 percent of your order is awarded to the band’s account. That coupon number is 10522266.

Also, Barnes and Noble has a list of books suggested by Sawtooth Mountain Elementary kindergarten and first grade teachers and during the fundraiser on Nov. 5 there will be a display at the store with those books available for purchase. The books come to Sawtooth Elementary and 10 percent of those sales also go to the high school band. The band students going to Duluth will be happy to take orders for those books!

Barnes and Noble is highlighting their coffee shop bakery goods. You can order several kinds of cheesecake for $40 each: Chocolate mousse, pumpkin, red velvet or original. Or a four-pack of cupcakes at $9 each: Double fudge, vanilla bean or red velvet. If orders are given to Band Director Keri Bilben at the school by Nov. 1, the band members can pick them up for delivery to Grand Marais.

Fundraisers are a necessity in this current economy. This one is an easy one—by doing some online Christmas shopping at Barnes and Noble community members can take advantage of an offer from a generous corporation to help fund a school trip.

For more information, contact Kerri Bilben at kbilben@isd166.k12.mn.us; call the school at 387-2273; Sandy Stover at larsen@boreal.org or talk to any high school band student.
