An intensive 2 1/2–day workshop designed to understand racism and what can be done to eliminate it is set for Oct. 3-5 at the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino.
Known as Undoing Racism, the program is sponsored by the People’s Institute North, Grand Portage Band, Violence Prevention Center and the Northland Foundation. The workshop is intended to educate, challenge and empower people to “undo” the racist structures that hinder effective social change.
Participants will learn to work more effectively in diverse communities; challenge old assumptions about how your work is or is not affected by racism; develop an accurate analysis of the issues you’re working in; and identify and begin to “undo” racist planning, policies, programs and procedures.
The workshop runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 3; 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 4; and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 5. All participants must agree to attend the full workshop.
Total registration is limited to 40 people; there is a $100 registration fee, and applications must be received by Sept. 28. Contact the Violence Prevention Center at (218) 387-1262 for more information or to sign up.
