Senior pitcher Dylan Quaife led Cook County to a 5-1 victory over Silver Bay with seven strong innings of pitching. He allowed one earned run on nine hits for the Vikings in their game against the Silver Bay Mariners on Thursday, May 3.
Both teams had plenty of scoring opportunities, but Cook County was able to push runners across the plate on seven hits and three errors by Silver Bay.
The Vikings led 1-0 after the first inning on an RBI single by Quaife. The score stayed 1-0 through four innings until the Vikings pushed another across the plate in the fifth inning and scored one more run in the sixth. Kale Boomer hit an RBI single in the fifth to score Gunnar Anderson. The Vikings scored two more runs in the top of the seventh behind Mike Sjogren’s triple, which scored Boomer and Colin Everson’s single, which scored Mike Sjogren.
For the game Boomer reached base three times and scored two runs and had one RBI. Quaife’s toughest inning was the fifth when Silver Bay loaded the bases with two outs. Quaife got the Mariners’ Cody Larson to groundout to eighth-grader Rory Bakke to end the inning. Vikings 10-run McGregor/Cromwell
Cook County’s bats came alive against McGregor/Cromwell as the Vikings scored nine runs in the first three innings and then went on to 10-run their opponent 16-4. The game was played on Friday, May 5 at Arleigh Jorgenson field.
The Vikings’ Colin Everson was 3-4 at the plate while Dylan Quaife, Joe Borud, and Alex Murray all were 2-3 at the plate. Mike Sjogren and Quaife each had a triple and Everson and Murray each connected for a double. Sjogren was the winning pitcher.
Other Vikings to record hits were Kale Boomer, Gunnar Anderson and Hunter Farley.
The Vikings were now 4-5 for the year and had recorded three wins in a row.
Two Harbors Agates prove tough
The Two Harbors Agates traveled to Grand Marais on Tuesday, May 8 and faced the Vikings in a rematch. Despite a muchimproved Viking team, the Agates were once again the better team, winning 14-1.
Both Kale Boomer and Colin Everson took turns pitching for the Vikings, but it wasn’t their day as Two Harbors batters combined for 10 hits, 10 walks, 10 RBIs and 14 runs scored. Two Harbors had two big innings, putting 5 runs on the board in the third inning and adding 6 more runs in the sixth inning.
Two Harbors pitcher Mark Pederson got the win for Two Harbors. Pederson gave up 8 hits, struck out three and didn’t give up a walk. The Vikings had 3 errors and Two Harbors had 1 error for the game.
Cook County’s lone run came in the third inning on an RBI double by Mike Sjogren, which sent Boomer home. Boomer was 2 for 3 at the plate while Hunter Farley, Thomas Anderson and Sjogren each got hits.
The Vikings played again on Thursday against Floodwood at press time and on Friday, May 11, they play at home against Northeast Range. Game time is 4 p.m.
