Far left: While Abby Sutton set the ball her sister, Linden (12), watched and got ready to make a play against Lakeview Christian Academy last Thursday night at home. The Vikings were thoroughly dominant and swept the match 3-0. Left: Katie Vanderheiden (6) went up high to block a shot against Lakeview. Below: Sarah Deschampe was ready to make a play in case Breanna Peterson missed the bump, which she didn’t, against the Lions. The Vikings are now 9-4 on the year and have 5 more games remaining in the season before playoffs.
The Cook County High School Viking girls made short work of Lakeview Christian Academy last Thursday night when they defeated the Lions 25-9, 25-6, 25-19 to take the match 3-0 in the best of the 5 game series at home.
For the game, Rachel Wieben had 11 digs, Ali Iverson had 7 kills, and Jessica Berg-Collman had 11 set assists to lead the Vikings. Taylor Ryden also contributed 5 kills and Sarah Deschampe had 10 digs to lead the dominant Viking team.
“We played well the first two games and then I put in some younger players to start the third game. We were down 10-7 when I put the varsity back in and they took over to close out Lakeview,” said Head Coach Pam Taylor.
The Vikings record went to 8-4, and 4-2 in the conference.
Vikings beat Barnum 3-2
The CCHS girls took the long bus ride to Barnum on Tuesday, October 2 to face the always-tough Barnum Bombers.
“We played well the first game, beating Barnum 25-19. Then we stopped talking. We stopped communicating on the floor, just shut down out there and lost the next two games,” Taylor said.
Barnum took those games 25-20 and 25-21.
Game four saw a change in the Vikings’ play when Coach Taylor inserted Taylor Ryden and Linden Sutton into the back row. The Vikings won game four 25-13 and closed Barnum out 15-9 to take the match.
“Taylor kept people talking, kept them motivated. When we talk, we play well. When we stop talking, well ….we just don’t play,” said Coach Taylor.
Once again Ali Iverson had a big night for the Vikes with 9 kills, 1 block, 2 aces and 22 digs. Theresa Morrin had 7 digs, 2 kills, 2 aces and 2 blocks while Taylor ended with 17 digs, and 2 blocks and 2 set assists.
Because Linden Sutton played one game of JV, she couldn’t play the 5th game against Barnum. She ended her night with 3 aces, 5 set assists and 4 digs. Abbey Sutton had 6 digs and 5 set assists and Ana Carman had 12 digs, 2 aces and 13 serves. Rachel Wieben contributed 4 digs and 1 kill and Jessica Berg-Collman had 5 digs, 2 aces and 12 serves in. Katie Vanderheiden had 3 digs and 1 kill and Sarah Deschampe had 7 digs and 1 kill. Stephanie Lashinski had 2 kills on the night.
The Vikings take to the road for their next 3 games before coming home again on October 9 to take on McGregor at 6:30 p.m.
