Freefall and Adrenaline, the winning names selected from 3,800 entries in a contest to name Lutsen Mountains Ski Area’s two newest expert runs, pretty much say it all.
With a 90 percent grade—a pitch that can hold snow and still be navigated by the best snowboarders and skiers—these hills will rival their big brother, the Plunge, to date the only double-black-diamond ski run in the Midwest.
The two new runs are located on Moose Mountain’s North Face and lie between the Plunge and the gondola summit.
Fifty-one entrants won a oneyear ski pass to Lutsen ski hill and the bragging rights to say they named one (or both) of the new runs.
According to Jim Vick, marketing director at Lutsen, one of the runs is very similar to the Plunge, dropping over a near vertical precipice before mellowing slightly in pitch. The second offers a more consistent grade, making it accessible to a wider range of expert skiers and not limited to the adrenaline junkies. But, said Vick, both are classified as double-black-diamond runs.
“We are thrilled to add this expert terrain,” said Vick, adding,
While only about 5 percent of our visitors will ride these trails, there is mystique about a mountain that exceeds your ability. This is the stuff of legend. It sets goals for a future trip.
“And for those who successfully navigate the run, it provides for stories of a lifetime.”
