As soon as the ball got over the half court line, Viking Head Coach Pat Eliasen said Cromwell defenders were on Viking ball handlers like glue stuck to a toddler’s fingers.

“Their pressure resulted in too many turnovers for us,” Eliasen said of the away game played Friday, January 30. The Vikings lost 66-40.

When the Vikings did get the ball into play and ran their offense, the results were extremely positive. “As a team we shot 48 percent, which is the best we have done so far this year,” said Eliasen. “Where we lost the game was in turnovers and in rebounding. Cromwell worked hard on the boards and many times were able to get multiple chances at scoring.”

One of the players Cromwell held in check was Jamie Wick. Wick, said Eliasen, “was in the post and they played a 2-3 against us all night. They packed it in effectively and took the post play away from us.”

Sam O’Phelan played a good solid game for the Vikings, scoring 12 points and pulling down 6 rebounds. Andy Farley netted 12 points with 4 boards while Rory Bakke 9, Lucas Phillips 3, Jared Spry 2; Jamie Wick 2 also scored points for the Vikings. Phillips led the team in rebounding with 7.

Austin Pfisthner 20, and Zion Smith 17, led Cromwell in scoring.

Vikings lose to Wrenshall

On Tuesday, February 3, the Vikings traveled to Wrenshall to face the 14-5 Wrens, falling 70-51.

“Wrenshall has some pretty big boys on their team” said Assistant Coach Rick Crawford. “They have 12 seniors on their roster, no juniors or sophomores and two freshmen.”

Andy Farley led the Vikings with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Lucas Phillips scored 11 points and pulled down 7 boards while Jamie Wick had 9 points and 5 rebounds; Rory Bakke finished with 6 points and 5 rebounds. Marcus Logan 5, Sam O’Phelan 4, and Jerod Spry 3, also scored points for the Vikings.

Aaron Adkins led Wrenshall with 20 points. “He killed us—well their whole team killed us—with their 3-point shooting,” Coach Crawford said.

Overall the Vikings were 20 of 60 from the field, hitting 33.3 percent of their shots. The Vikings committed 16 turnovers and pulled down 11 offensive rebounds and 17 defensive rebounds.

“Lucas Phillips had an outstanding game for us. He was 5-9 from the field, hitting 55.6 percent of his shots. He also rebounded really well. Andy Farley also played a really good game. Besides scoring and rebounding, Andy had a couple of big steals. He’s really seeing the court well and always hustles out there.

“Overall Head Coach Eliasen and I thought the kids played really well. We’re in a rebuilding year. The kids are getting better and better. We are really proud of their effort,” Crawford said.
