The Cook County High School Viking girls had trouble generating any offense in their 68-27 loss to the Floodwood Polar Bears on Friday, January 16 in Floodwood.
Once again the Vikings failed to score a 3-point basket while Floodwood converted six 3-point shots in the game.
While the Vikings only scored 15 points in the first half, Floodwood managed to hold them to 12 points in the second half.
Emily Jacobsen led Viking scorers with 11 points. Lily Gruber-Schulz 6, Shauna Blake 4, Sarah Toftey 2, Jami Sjogren 2, and Sophie Eliasen 2 followed her.
Floodwood’s leading scorers were Alyssa White, 18, and Megan Aho 17.
“We played very, very poorly versus Floodwood,” said Head Coach Mitch Dorr. “We did not execute our press break as practiced and they really hurt us with their pressure defense.”
Vikings lose to Timberwolves
Following a late night return from Floodwood, Viking players got precious little sleep before catching another school bus the next morning, this time it was to play an afternoon game against another tough opponent, the Ely Timberwolves. The Vikings fell to the Timberwolves, 44-33.
“In Ely, we played poorly in the first half and then focused on the game plan of stopping their two big scorers in the second half,” said Coach Dorr. “We cut the lead to six, but couldn’t get any closer. We need to find a way to put two great halves together.
“Maya McHugh played great in Ely. Right now she is our defensive stopper. She played great defense on their best player.”
Emily Jacobsen led the Vikings with 13 points. Lily Gruber-Schulz 12, Sarah Toftey 5, Jami Sjogren 2, and Shauna Blake 1 also scored for the Vikings.
Marilee Muhvich who scored 16 points and Natalie McDonald who netted 13 points led Ely.
While the Vikings failed to score a 3-point basket Ely’s Muhvich hit three 3-point shots.
