For generations, motorists commemorated their journey “up north” by honking the horn as they passed the solitary pine on the expressway between Duluth and Two Harbors. Hearts were broken to see the fallen tree in the highway medium. It was cut down by unknown persons on April 30, 2009.
The city of Two Harbors wants to do something special to commemorate the North Shore icon, which meant so much to the community and North Shore visitors.
Mayor Randy Bolen held a community meeting on Tuesday, May 12 to hear from the public about what it would like to do to memorialize the trunk of the honking tree. The Duluth News-Tribune reports that suggestions at the meeting ranged from “chainsaw carvings to plaques and wooden nickels.”
Mayor Bolen will be accepting ideas from the public through Memorial Day. He will then meet with representatives of other governmental units in the area to choose a final memorial plan.
