A two-vehicle accident on Devil Track Road (County Road 8) on August 11, 2011 resulted in the death of a small dog and charges of inattentive driving and crossing the centerline for one driver.
According to the law enforcement report of the accident, Hailey Rae Warzonek, 20, of Orr, MN, was traveling north in a 2008 Saturn Vue on Devil Track Road and was approaching a corner when another vehicle started to drift into her lane. Warzonek said she slowed down and got as far off the roadway as she could, but the other vehicle, a 2003 Dodge Durango driven by Marty Jo Houglum, 44, of Grand Marais continued into her lane, striking her vehicle on the front driver’s side.
Maple Hill Fire Department and Cook County Ambulance were paged, however the fire department was cancelled. The ambulance transported both parties to the hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.
It appears that Warzonek’s small dog was killed on impact.
