Two brick red historic covered bridges at Lutsen Resort were heavily damaged by torrents of water and debris that flooded the Poplar River on the evening of Friday, May 13.

The upper 77-foot-long foot traffic bridge that spans the Poplar River was built in 1930. The 144-foot lower bridge was built in the 1950s.

A spokesperson from Lutsen Resort said, “That while the bridges suffered heavy damages, it is believed enough infrastructure is intact to save them.”

Uprooted pine and spruce trees carried down the Poplar River were believed to have caused damage to the bridges.

On Facebook, a spokesperson for the resort wrote, “The bridges themselves were extremely well built; however, there is no match for the full-grown trees that were washed away and barreled down the river towards the bridges. We are thankful that key pieces are still intact and remain hopeful that enough critical infrastructure has not been damaged so we can repair both bridges that are so very much an important part of Lutsen’s history, a part of the most historic resort in Minnesota.”
