Truth in Taxation meeting set

Do you have questions about your 2016 proposed tax on your home or property? Then come to the annual Cook County Truth-in-Taxation meeting on December 1, at 6 p.m. in the Cook County Commissioner’s Room at the courthouse.

This meeting, said Auditor/Treasurer Braidy Powers, gives property owners an opportunity to review information sent to them by his department and discuss those changes with Cook County Assessor Betty Schulz to determine why she and her staff recommended raising—or lowering— taxes on your property.

The purpose of holding a Truth-in-Taxation meeting is to discuss the change in property taxes proposed and the specific purpose for which the property tax revenue is being changed.

The county board will be in attendance and will make a case-by-case determination about whether the increase in valuation is merited or not. Last year the board agreed with several people who asked to have their property values lowered based on respectful well thought-out arguments.

If this meeting is not completed on its scheduled date, a second meeting will be called to continue the discussions. The county board has until December 28 to set the 2016 levy and the Truth-in Taxation meetings must be completed by that time.
