An Indiana family’s Canadian vacation was derailed when the pickup truck they were riding in went off Highway 61at about a mile past the North Shore Market in Tofte on Friday, July 1, just before noon. The boat and trailer they were pulling were badly damaged in the accident.
Debris was scattered in the ditch for about 40 yards and traffic was slowed until a tow truck and crew could cleanup the area.
According to Minnesota State Patrol Officer Leah Carpenter there were three minor injuries. Besides the boat and trailer wreckage, the truck was also damaged.
Carpenter said no other vehicles were involved and no drugs or alcohol were present. “The accident was due to inattentive driving,” said Carpenter.
First Responders from Tofte and Schroeder were on the scene helping with traffic control and assisting the vehicle’s occupants. The Tofte Fire Department also responded with an engine, because, as Carpenter noted, “At first we thought the vehicle had rolled over, and we were concerned about a vehicle fire. But later we saw that the vehicle had hit a sign and remained upright.”
The truck traveled about 20 yards into the ditch.
The ambulance squad from the Cook County North Shore Hospital was also called and offered assistance to the injured parties.
