Shirley Heinzen’s 4-pound 3-ounce lake trout took top honors in the March 5, 2017, annual trout derby held on Gunflint Lake.
Heinzen received $500 for her big fish.
All told 75 people took part in the derby.
The weather was overcast and cloudy, breezy, “about 30 F maybe, and seemed colder with the wind,” said Samantha Wallner.
“We raised a little over $2,000. All of our fundraiser events raise money for trail maintenance and grooming operations. We also offer two scholarships to graduating seniors at their May awards day,” added Wallner.
Even though he wasn’t in attendance, LeRoy Johnson was the big winner of the day. His name was pulled in the raffle for the 2017 Polaris Ranger.
The top finishers in the fishing contest were Parker Slanga 2nd, Connie Rasmussen 3rd, Jeff Buetow 4th, Mark Harrington 5th, Stephanie Radloff 6th, Arlo Christensen 7th, Doug Finn 8th, Victor Pederson 9th, Victor Pederson 10th, and Jenny Fagerman, 11th.
Not everybody caught fish, but everybody had a great time for a great cause, said Wallner.
