Trips and Medicare tips at Senior Center

Brighter side of aging



Arranging transportation to medical appointments outside of Cook County may be difficult. If you are able to schedule your appointment between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the second Tuesday or the fourth Thursday of each month, you may take the Arrowhead Transit bus to your appointment. Call 370- 1515 to reserve a seat on the bus.

The Cook County Council on Aging has a grant from the Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging, a division of Arrowhead Regional Development Council, and Cook County to provide transportation to outof the county medical appointments for seniors ages 60 plus.

The Cook County Council on Aging also has received a grant from the North Shore Health Care Foundation to provide transportation to outof the county medical appointments to people under age 60.

When you are unable to arrange your own ride, call the Senior Center at 387-2660 each time that you need a ride. We will arrange for a ride for you.

If you would like to volunteer as a medical transport driver, please watch for future announcements that new drivers are being accepted.

The Senior Center is hosting the Old-Timers Gathering on Saturday, August 1 at 10 a.m. Meet old friends as you enjoy doughnuts and coffee in the newly redecorated Senior Center.

Scrabble has been popular on Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. and will continue in August. Cribbage players on Thursdays at 9:45 a.m. are always looking for additional players. The gentle exercise and flexibility group meets at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays. Come once or every week for these activities. No prior registration is necessary.

The Senior Center will be scheduling three Medicare information presentations in August and September. These programs are: New to Medicare, the A-D of it; Health Fraud, Waste and Abuse; and Long Term Care Partnerships. If you have an interest in a particular presentation, help us schedule it. Please call the Senior Center to let us know when you are not available to attend.

Marjori Bottila from Arrowhead Regional Development Commission will be available at the Senior Center one day each month October through December to answer your Medicare questions. Call the Senior Center for information on contacting Ms. Bottila prior to October.

There are several bus trips scheduled in August and September. Call the Senior Center to register or ask questions.

On Saturday, August 8 we will be attending Rendezvous Days in Grand Portage. We will leave Grand Marais at 11:30 a.m. and return at 4:30 p.m. for $14/person.

We will pick blueberries along the Gunflint Trail on August 12 and have lunch at Trail Center. The bus transportation is $23/person.

At this time there are four seats remaining on the bus for our trip to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario August 31 – September 4. There is still time to register for the trip.

The afternoon of Monday, September 21, we will be riding the gondola at Lutsen Mountains to see the changing maple leaves for $17/person.

Watch for the date of our fall color tour and lunch at the Trestle Inn.
