It’s great that a commissioner is knowledgeable to pick out flaws in the construction at the library but let’s get real, it’s not Halloween. With a quick change of costume, a commissioner is not a qualified building inspector. I question if he is even a licensed contractor.
However, Commissioner Sobanja has been paid tax dollars in the form of per diem to inspect the inspection of the inspector we pay to inspect that has been negligent in their job performance, that being ORB Management.
This is not the county board’s personal rec room — this is a public building. When it was established that both ORB Management and the construction crew were negligent in their contractual obligations and Minnesota building codes, an independent qualified inspector that is not connected to ORB Management should have been brought in to inspect all work before any construction continued. ORB should have footed the bill.
In a worst-case scenario, improper anchor bolts could allow a wall to buckle and the roof to fall in on people. Did Inspector Sobanja miss anything? In a worst-case scenario who would be responsible for a lawsuit? My guess is not the Sobanja Inspecting Firm or ORB Management. It would be the taxpayers of Grand Marais.
Popcorn, peanuts, cotton candy! Stick around, folks, the show has just begun. It’s the county board’s five-ring circus sponsored by 1 percent tax and it’s sure to be a good laugh and, might I add, at your expense!
