Three candidates running for the same committee person at large (1) seat on the Grand Portage Reservation Council vied for votes in an April 5 primary.
Under tribal rules, if more than two candidates are running for a council position, a primary must be held to winnow the race to two.
Voting polls opened at the Old Log Community Building at 8 a.m. and ran until 8 p.m.
Candidates running for the committee at large seat (1) are incumbent William “Bill” Myers, Donavan Dahmen and Toby Stephens.
When the votes were tallied the two highest vote getters were William (Bill) Myers with 94 votes and Toby Stephens with 69 votes. Myers received 24 on-reservation votes and 70 off-reservation votes. Stephen received 49 on-reservation votes and 20 off-reservation votes.
There will be three races held in the June 14 general election.
The Tribal Council secretary/ treasurer seat will have incumbent April McCormick challenged by Joan Johnson. The second race for committee person at large is Rob Hull and Agatha Armstrong. Because there are only two opponents in those two races there will be no primary.
