Treasures from the Dungeon at Higher Ed program Oct. 15

Cook County Higher Education’s October guest lecture will spotlight Treasures from the Dungeon, or a Park Service Basement.

Steve Veit of the Grand Portage National Monument will detail selections from the monument’s collection of over 88,000 objects covering the region’s rich history of tangible links to the past through prehistoric times, the fur trade era, and more recent Ojibwe arts and craft.

The presentation will primarily focus on objects not regularly on display that are housed within the monument’s artifact storage unit. Photographs of the pieces will be displayed and the unique stories and significance of the objects will be shared.

Steve Veit came to Cook County in the summer of 1998 as a college student volunteering as an historic interpreter for Grand Portage National Monument. Today he serves as a jack-of-all-trades, master of none in the official capacity as a museum technician, but remains heavily involved in archaeological and other cultural and natural resource projects for the monument, Isle Royale National Park, and the Grand Portage Indian Reservation.

The program will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at Cook County Higher Education’s North Shore campus on West Third Street.

The guest lecture series is offered to the community free, although donations are appreciated. The series is sponsored by the Grand Marais State Bank, Drury Lane Books, Buck’s Hardware, Sawbill Canoe Outfitters, Lake Superior Trading Post, White Pine North, Birchbark Books and Gifts, and Cook County Co-Op.
