To earn their Bronze Award, Junior Girl Scouts must complete a community service project. Cook County Girl Scout Troop 4070 decided their Bronze Award project would benefit local animals, especially those in need of forever homes. The fifth-graders organized Trails for Tails, a Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, May 9, starting and finishing at the Sawtooth Elementary School playground.
The Girl Scouts (with some help from leaders and parents) put together an event plan, obtained permission for a 2K-and ½-mile route, made posters, contacted the local media, and gathered raffle items for the day of the event.
They even baked some tasty dog treats to sell at the Run/Walk and made trophies for the winners of each run/walk.
The day of the walk was cold and windy, but there was a great turnout of people and pets. Pastor Kris Garey of Trinity Lutheran Church started the event with a gentle blessing of all the pets.
The Girl Scouts raised $678.50, which was used to purchase 35 blankets for Arrowhead Animal Rescue so the next 35 animals rescued will have a blanket of their own. They also purchased cat litter, cat and dog toys and vet care. They also purchased a gift certificate for Go Dog North Shore to be used in developing a local dog park to be enjoyed by all animals.
The girls in Troop 4070 wish to thank everyone who helped, who donated and who came out for Trails for Tails.
