Falling snow might have slowed the racers down, but it was appropriate for the Dog Days of Winter and the dogs didn’t seem to mind one bit.
Sled dog races and skijoring races were part of the family fun Dog Days of Winter festivities held at Trail Center on Poplar Lake on Saturday, March 12.
There were three dog sled events. Eight dogsled teams ran a seven-mile trail twice. Six dog sled teams raced 3.8 miles and four dog teams competed over two miles.
Skijoring, an event that partners one or two dogs and a cross country ski racer, competed over one mile.
There was a bonfire, smores, hotdogs and drinks for the fans who came out to watch and participate.
Cathy Quinn was the lead organizer for the Dog Days of Winter and she had this to say,
“This year’s Dog Days of Winter once again showcased the beauty of winter in the north and our canine athletes. We had teams from Ontario, Wisconsin, and Minnesota participate in this year’s event. A little snowstorm only made the day that much more exciting! As always, thanks to Visit Cook County for their support and special thanks to Sarah Hamilton of Trail Center Lodge for hosting us!”
The event is a fundraiser for Go Dog North Shore and Cook County Dog Mushers Inc.
