A tragedy in Miami, Florida on February 20 has personally touched the family of Gene and Barb Erickson of Grand Marais.
On February 20, Gene’s niece Michelle Zuniga, 43, was critically injured in a shooting at the hands of her husband, 45-year-old Carlos Zuniga, who fatally wounded their 11-year-old son Stefan and critically injured their 14-yearold daughter Lauren, according to Miami news outlet WSVN. com. The shooting took place in their home and ended with a fatal shot Zuniga directed on himself.
Michelle Zuniga is the daughter of Don and Jan Erickson. Don and Gene Erickson are brothers and grew up in Cook County.
According to WSVN.com, Carlos Zuniga was a pilot who most recently worked as a safety inspector for the FAA. He and Michelle married in 1998.
The family of Don and Jan Erickson sent a press release to the Cook County News-Herald on February 26 saying that Michelle and daughter Lauren were in intensive care but in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.
A trust has been set up for Michelle and Lauren by the law firm of Malko & Magolnick PA. Contributions can be made out to The Marko & Magolnick Trust Account, with a notation that the contribution is for the benefit of Michelle and Lauren Zuniga, and sent to Malko & Magolnick PA, 3001 SW Third Avenue, Miami, FL 33129, Attn: Ligia Munguia.
The press release stated, “The family would like to thank everyone for all their concerns, support, and prayers.”
