Traffic stop leads to drug arrest in Grand Marais

After being stopped for a traffic violation, Terrence Loren Bartels, 56, of Grand Marais and Swatara, MN, was arrested and charged with fifth degree possession of a controlled substance, a felony and possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor.

According to court documents, at about 5 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27, a Cook County Sheriffs Deputy on patrol in Grand Marais observed a red pickup truck make a “sudden and unsignaled” turn into the parking lot at the Birch Terrace Supper Club. The deputy used his emergency lights to make a traffic stop. Because of suspicious behavior when stopped, Bartels was searched and found to be in possession of a pipe in a pouch. He was also in possession of a six-inch knife and in the vehicle there was an uncased firearm.

The pipe was coated with some sort of residue, which when tested, was found to be methamphetamine.

Bartels remains in custody awaiting his next court appearance.
