Watercolorist Karen Knutson “fills her soul” by painting on the North Shore. Her work will be on display at the Johnson Heritage Post from August 17 – September 9 in an exhibit entitled Traditional versus abstract interpretations of the North Shore—Watercolor and mixed media painting. This unusual but beautiful look at native birch trees is titled Out of the Box.
The North Shore is a very special place for the Knutson family. Karen Knutson and her family make the trip from their home in Minneapolis to their Lutsen cabin at least three or four times each year. And each trip, Karen Knutson says, “fills her soul.” She always paints while there and KahNeeTah Gallery in Lutsen has featured her work for the past 20 years. Many of those pieces will be featured at Johnson Heritage Post in Traditional versus abstract interpretations of the North Shore—Watercolor and mixed media painting from August 17 – September 9.
Knutson’s work has been featured in a number of publications such as Watercolor—The Spirit of Spontaneity, Watercolor without Boundaries and others. She has been teaching watercolor workshops since 1988 and has taught several at the Grand Marais Art Colony.
Both traditional and abstract interpretations of the North Shore will be featured at the exhibit. Knutson prefers painting abstract or semi-abstract these days but also will bring some traditional paintings. She will have an interactive corner, where the viewer will vote on their favorite interpretation of Split Rock Lighthouse.
