A small contingent of boys and girls competed at the April 26 Eveleth/ Gilbert track meet, which was loaded with double A schools. And although it was windy, the kids posted some personal bests and overall had a strong showing for a young team.
Results for the girls
The Vikings took eighth place in the 4×800 meters in 12:33.34.
Payton Dobin ran the 100 meters in 15.88 to place 18th, Anna Hay ran 16.27 to take 22nd and Ellen Callender ran 16.65 to nab 25th out of 39 runners.
The girls’ 4×200 meter relay team placed sixth with a time of 2:04.97.
Eighth-grader Kaylie Viren ran 7:12 for the 1600-meter run to finish 26th place.
In the 4×100 meter relay, the girls ran 1:05.12 to take 11th.
Sophie Eliasen placed seventh in the 400 meters run with a time of 69.28.
Anna Hay placed 13th in 31.39 in the 200 meters with Sophie Eliasen finishing 17th in 31.59 and Payton Dobin taking 19th in 32.03.
Robin Henrikson crossed the line in 60.86 seconds in the 300- meter hurdles to place 10th. Aurora Schelmeske placed 17th and Saira Smith 18th in 73.77 seconds and 75.29 seconds.
Malin Anderson, a ninth grader, ran 3 minutes flat for the 800 meters to place eighth and Sammie Garrity, an eighth grader, took 17th in 3:09.80.
Freshman Cece Chmelik took eighth in the 3200 meters run with a time of 16:02.
Hailey Smith, a sophomore, threw the shot put 28 feet, 2 inches to take seventh place. Hailey threw the discus 59 feet 1 inch to place 27th.
Boys’ results
Neither senior Will Surbaugh nor Jack Haussner attended the meet. They were both on vacation. Haussner would have almost assuredly won the high hurdles and placed very high in the 100, 200 and long jump, and Surbaugh would have placed in both the mile and half mile with his current times. Still, the kids who did attend performed very well against some stiff competition.
In the boys’ 100 meters eighth-grader Kyler Hansen ran 18.63 and seventh-grader Andrew Hallberg ran 20.12.
Keegan Morrison ran 5:40.5 in the 1600-meter run to place 20th.
Tanner DeBoer completed the 400 meter (quarter mile) dash in 62.11 to place 19th out of 38 runners. Ben Rex crossed the line in 64:08 for 26th and Haddon Taylor ran 81.83.
Kevin Viren, a sophomore, placed 5th in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:12.
Ben Rex crossed the line in 28.59 seconds in the 200 meters, a fast time for an eighth grader and took 27th. Haddon Taylor, 36.40, Kyler Hansen, 36.55 and Andrew Hallberg, 41.60 placed 35th, 36th, and 37th in the race. All of those kids are in seventh or eighth grades.
