The window for township citizens to officially file for election to a town board closed on January 17. Lutsen, Tofte, and Schroeder all needed candidates for a three-year term of supervisor and a two-year term of clerk. Nearly every board has had citizens step forward, interested to serve—except the township of Schroeder.

Schroeder still seeking clerk

Current Clerk Carol Tveekrem has announced numerous times that she is no longer interested in serving as town clerk. Tveekrem was appointed to fill a vacancy in the clerk position in 2002. She has been re-elected five times since then, and she told the Cook County News-Herald that it is time a younger person took on the task. Reached by phone the day after the filing period closed, Tveekrem said no one had filed to run for clerk.

Tveekrem said there is a citizen who has expressed interest, but they were still debating when the filing period closed. She is hopeful they will announce their candidacy and run as a write-in for the clerk job.

Ross Willson currently holds the supervisor seat open for filing in Schroeder. On January 7, 2012, Willson told the Cook County News- Herald that he would be running for re-election. However, Tveekrem said he did not officially file, so he will be a write-in candidate.

The Schroeder supervisors, clerk and treasurer are paid $75 for each monthly meeting. Supervisors receive $10 per hour for work outside the regular meetings. The clerk and treasurer are reimbursed at a rate of $13 per hour outside meetings.

Schroeder meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Schroeder Town Hall at 24 Cramer Road.

Lutsen has a full ballot

Lutsen has no such shortage, as candidates have filed for both the supervisor and clerk positions on the Lutsen Town Board.

Current Supervisor Diane Parker announced on January 17 that she would not run again. In addition to her role as Lutsen supervisor, Parker has assumed a seat on the Cook County Council on Aging. She said she feels she can’t give the proper attention to both boards.

“I love being on the Council on Aging. We’re doing a lot of neat things,” said Parker. I’ve served two terms, so maybe someone else will step up for the Lutsen Town Board.” “I enjoyed my time on the Lutsen Town Board,” she added.

Parker will be gratified to learn that not one, but two people have come forward to run for Lutsen supervisor.

Alta McQuatters, who served as Lutsen town clerk for many years has submitted her name as a candidate. Also filing to run for the position is Ginny Storlie, former owner of Sawtooth Outfitters in Tofte and a greenhouse in Lutsen.

There are two candidates for the clerk position as well. When former clerk Amity Goettl resigned in August 2011, several people applied to serve as interim clerk—Silviya Duclos, Gail L. Thompson and Nancy Hansen. Silviya Duclos was appointed to the clerk position on September 20.

Duclos has filed to run for the position, as has Gail L. Thompson.

The compensation for the Lutsen supervisors, clerk and treasurer is $85 per meeting. For township work outside of meetings, supervisors are paid $15 per hour and the town clerk and treasurer are paid $20 per hour.

Lutsen meetings are the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Lutsen Town Hall at 116 Caribou Trail.

Things status quo in Tofte

In Tofte, there will be names on the ballot. Supervisor Paul James and Clerk Barb Gervais have both filed to run for re-election. No challengers have submitted their names for candidacy.

The Tofte supervisors, clerk and the treasurer are reimbursed $75 per meeting and the treasurer and clerk are paid $20 per hour for work outside the monthly meetings.

The Tofte board meets the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Tofte Town Hall at 7240 Tofte Park Road.
