Full slates for township spring elections, All incumbents seeking re-election in March

COOK COUNTY West End – All six incumbents will be on the ballots in Lutsen, Schroeder and Tofte townships when residents cast their votes in the March 14 spring elections. Each of the townships elects a Supervisor for a three-year term and a Treasurer for a two-year term. The filing period ended Tuesday, January 17.

Each township election polling time is from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. March 14 immediately preceding the annual meeting. Mail ballots can also be requested from the township clerks in mid-February.

Lutsen

In Lutsen, Supervisor Lollie Cooper is seeking a second term on the three-member township board. Ashley VanDoren is running again for Treasurer, a position she was elected to in 2020 to fill a vacancy and 2021 for a full term.

Information on the Lutsen annual meeting and the proposed township budget are already posted on their website lutsentownship.com.

Tofte

Alayna Carrier was appointed Tofte Treasurer on May 12, 2022, to fill a long vacancy and is running for a full term. Joining her on the ballot is longtime Supervisor Craig Horak.

Schroeder

Supervisor Lloyd Chase is seeking another term on the board. He was appointed to fill a vacancy in 2020 and elected to complete a short term in 2021. Treasurer Carla Menssen is running for re-election to continue serving the township.

Townships hold annual elections each spring. In each town, one of the three Supervisors is elected for a three-year term. The town Treasurer and Clerk are on the ballot in alternate years for two-year terms. These are the only annual and spring elections in Cook County.

Township government is very grass roots democracy. Each town holds an annual meeting on the second Tuesday in March where residents gather to make recommendations for the next year’s town budget, set the property tax levy and discuss town issues. The voters often cast their election ballots when they come to the meeting and the election results are announced during the meeting.

Residents can follow the happenings of their towns on the web sites each township maintains. Those sites contain dates and agendas for upcoming monthly town board meetings and the minutes of past annual meetings.
