Township citizens sought for election

It may seem early, but now is the time for citizens interested in running for office for the townships of Lutsen, Tofte, and Schroeder to file. The filing period for candidates opened December 29 and will remain open until Tuesday, January 12, 2010. At press time, no one had paid the $2 non-refundable filing fee, but several incumbents had announced whether they would—or would not—run for re-election.

At least one candidate is still undecided— Supervisor Joe Buttweiler of Lutsen said at the township’s December meeting that he was not sure he would run, but added that he “probably” would. However, reached by phone on Tuesday, December 29, Buttweiler said he is still undecided.

Lutsen Clerk Amity Goettl said she would run for re-election.

The compensation for Lutsen Township is $85 per meeting. For township work outside of meetings, supervisors are paid $15 per hour and the town clerk and treasurer are paid $20 per hour. Lutsen meetings are the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Lutsen Town Hall at 116 Caribou Trail.

The incumbents in the town of Schroeder have decided—neither Supervisor Cathy Johnson nor Clerk Carol Tveekrem will be running for reelection.

Johnson was originally elected to the Schroeder town board as a write-in candidate in 2003 and served until 2009. She agreed to return to the board to fill the unexpired term of the late Supervior Larry Gregg. Johnson emphatically stated that she is not running for re-election.

Likewise, Clerk Carol Tveekrem, who has served four terms after being appointed to fill an unexpired term, said she would not be running again.

Schroeder supervisors and clerks are paid $75 for each monthly meeting and receive $10 per hour for work outside the regular meetings. The clerk and treasurer are reimbursed at a rate of $13 per hour outside meetings. Schroeder meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Schroeder Town Hall at 24 Cramer Road.

In Tofte, Supervisor Tom Muntean and Clerk Barb Gervais are the incumbents. Muntean has declared that he will not run again. Tofte citizen Jim King has stated his intention to run for office, but at press time had not filed yet.

Reached by phone on December 29, Clerk Gervais said she would run for reelection. “I really enjoy doing the job,” she said. “I enjoy working with the board and the people of Tofte.”

Toftesupervisors and clerks are reimbursed $75 per meeting and the treasurer and clerk are paid $20 per hour for work outside the monthly meetings. The Tofte board meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Tofte Town Hall at 7240 Tofte Park Road.

Anyone interested in running for town board should contact the clerk of the respective township. In Lutsen, contact Clerk Amity Goettl at (218) 663- 7501. In Tofte, contact Clerk Barb Gervais at (218) 663-7315. In Schroeder, contact Clerk Carol Tveekrem at (218) 663-8109.

All three townships have the same board positions open—one supervisor for a three-year term and clerk for a two-year term. Elections for the town board seats will be held simultaneously on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, before the township annual meetings.
