I am not a big fan of cell towers. There is nothing “stealthy” about a cell tower. Yet I would not say I am anti-cell tower. However, I do take exception to putting one in the Tofte Cemetery.
The cemetery cannot be the only option. It may be the best option for AT&T but not for the town of Tofte. There must be other sites that offer AT&T reasonable
coverage. I would like to have these options open for review before the May 11 meeting.
I was raised to believe that cemeteries are to be respected; that a person’s choice of a final resting place should be honored.
The company that plans to build this tower has not said how large of a construction footprint they will need. There will be semi trucks hauling sections, cranes to erect the sections, dump trucks to haul fill and cement trucks to pour the pad. Trenches will need to be dug for the electricity and antenna cables. They need area to work in. Those grave sites that are in Tofte Cemetery don’t stand a chance.
It is up to the living to protect the wishes of those that have come before us. We honor our dead with parades, ceremonies, monuments and official holidays. Let’s honor those in the Tofte Cemetery by putting the cell tower elsewhere.
