On Thursday, September 11, 2014, the Cook County High School volleyball team beat the Barnum Bombers 25-18, 25-11, and 25-13 to take the best 3 out of 5 games at home.

That win brought the Vikings’ record to 5-0 on the season, but coaches and players knew that the next week they would be tested by a trial of fire when they faced three very tough teams in rapid succession.

For the game against Barnum Maddy Roy had 8 set assists, Britta Andress 5 kills, Alex Slanga 9 set assists, Linden Sutton 9 digs and 4 kills, Jami Sjogren 4 ace serves and Meredith Sutton had 4 kills.

On Monday, September 15 the Vikings traveled to play Mesabi East who earlier this year became the first Polar League Conference team to put a loss on Esko in many years. The win against Esko proved to be no fluke, as the Giants beat Cook County in three straight games 25-14, 25-16 and 25-17.

“That’s the worst volleyball that we have played all year,” said Head Coach Pam Taylor. “There’s not much to say about how we played other than it wasn’t good.”

For the Mesabi East contest, Alex Slanga had 5 ace serves, Meredith Sutton 8 kills, Linden Sutton 7 kills, Jami Sjogren 13 digs and Meredith Sutton 11 digs.

The next day the girls got back on the bus and headed to play the always-tough Carlton Bulldogs. The kids at Carlton play year-round. Their devotion and skill are admirable, because they aren’t always the most athletic team; just usually the best team and they always give Cook County trouble.

Tuesday night was no different as Carlton swept the Vikings 25-17, 25-9, 25-17, but Coach Taylor said, “Even though we lost we played much better last night against Carlton. Britta (Andress) had some nice blocks, which really surprised them. Linden (Sutton) is being consistent as well as Jami (Sjogren) and Maddy (Roy). Carlton parents commented that we improved 100 percent from last year.”

At Carlton Maddy finished with 4 ace serves, Linden Sutton 6 kills, Meredith Sutton 4 kills, Jamie Sjogren 9 digs and Carrie Palmer 6 digs.

On Thursday night, September 18, the girls played Esko at home, completing their rigorous week of play.

On September 20 the Vikings travel to play in the Hill City tournament then face Moose Lake away on September 25 before coming home September 30 to play Lake View Christian. The varsity takes the floor at 6:30 p.m.
