The Cook County Envirothon team had a fantastic year of learning and competition taking on the task of making an agricultural operation eco-friendly, sustainable and in compliance with environmental regulations. The Cook County team faced the challenge and earned 1st place in the regional tournament and 8th at the state tournament.
The Cook County Envirothon team— Sterling Anderson, Sarah Larsen, Morgan Weyrens-Welch, Mara MacDonell, and Audrey Summers—headed to the Cloquet Forestry Center on May 6 for their first tournament after months of study and preparation.
Coach April Wahlstrom said at the regional meet, the team had to demonstrate knowledge of water, soil, wildlife, forestry and current environmental issues. “They were given a problem to solve regarding some agricultural land with cattle and they needed to work out a plan to manage this land in a sustainable way,” said Wahlstrom.
The Cook County students’ preparation paid off and they came home with the gold, winning by 7 points overall and earning a berth at the state Envirothon Tournament at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn.
Two Harbors took second in the regional tournament and also traveled to the state tournament.
At the State Envirothon Tournament on Monday, May 20 at St. John’s University, the CCHS team faced some large schools and finished in the top 10, in 8th place out of 28 schools. Coach Wahlstrom said, “They did a wonderful job of representing our Cook County Community.”
