Too cold for school

Minnesota winters typically include some dangerously cold conditions, but this week is so cold that the schools have closed their doors for two days. I appreciate the concern for safety, but like many parents I am now stuck inside with two energy-filled children that cannot go outside to play.

Looks like we will be spending some time at the YMCA, and I would imagine we will not be the only ones there enjoying a warm gymnasium with our kids.

Record-breaking low temperatures this week have put a burden on most outdoor enthusiasts, but it did not stop the John Beargrease mushers from pressing through the night. Wind chills reaching 50 below zero and white-out conditions made the marathon extremely challenging for the mushers who were able to complete the race Tuesday evening.

Congratulations to Blake and Jennifer Freking, who respectfully took first and second place this year and were able to endure the high winds and brutally cold temperatures. I had a difficult time just running between the lodge and our house, which is only two doors away, without flash freezing in mid-stride. I could not imagine mushing a team of dogs in these brutal weather conditions.

The sun will come out again for the weekend, according to the meteorologists, with temperatures climbing back into the 30s for a couple of days before plunging below zero again. Warm weather will help the attendance for this weekend’s Fun Run, sponsored by the Cook County Ridge Riders Snowmobile Club, which will take place this Saturday.
