John Nelson was named Tofte Citizen of the Year on July 4, 2009. He was the second person to be named since the award was begun last year with Bob Boomgard receiving the honor by committee vote.
When Tofte town supervisor Paul James was asked about how John Nelson was named, he launched into a list of many things Nelson has done to benefit the community. He was a town supervisor from 1976 to 2003, has been a volunteer firefighter, has served in the fire relief association, and has volunteered his time and labor year after year at the park, the cemetery, and the annual 4th of July fireworks. He helped the town through a reorganization process and helped bring about the building of the fire hall and the town hall building. Most of this was done with no compensation, James said.
At the July 9, 2009 Tofte town board meeting, Jerry Gervais reported that he and John Nelson had removed stumps from the cemetery earlier in the day. They were working with the Garden Club on getting flowers and will be obtaining rip rap materials, flower pot holders, and a water tank to make sure the cemetery retains its beauty throughout the summer.
Many other people could probably add to the list of ways John Nelson—and people like him—make their communities nice places to be.
