Since its regular monthly meeting had just been held on Thursday, March 8, there was little new discussion at the To.fte annual meeting on March 13 at the Birch Grove Community Center. See page A7 for more Tofte news.
Election results were announced with no surprise. Township Supervisor Paul James received 14 votes to retain his spot on the board and Town Clerk Barb Gervais received 17 votes to retain her position. Both will serve 3-year terms.
About 20 people attended the meeting.
After the 2013 budget was reviewed it was decided to reconvene the annual meeting in August. A short, separate meeting to approve the 2013 budget will be held right before the supervisor’s meeting. James, who was elected moderator for the annual meeting, said by doing this it will allow supervisors to react to any unforeseen financial problems (if there should be any) without disrupting a fixed budget.
Fire Chief Richie Nelson said his squad of 14 firefighters responded to 14 fires and six motor vehicle accidents last year. None of the fires were in Tofte, said Nelson, who complimented his volunteer firefighters for their diligence and quick response when called out. Nelson also announced that recently retired U. S. Forest Service worker Tim Norman had named assistant fire chief.
Rescue Squad Chief Louise Trachta said there were 46 dispatch calls last year with an average of 3 – 4 people responding to each call. She said her staff of 13 volunteers was well trained and continuing to upgrade their skills as needed.
“I’m really proud of all of them and their professionalism,” said Trachta.
