Tofte Fire Chief Rich Nelson was happy to announce the grant that will enable the fire department to puchase a new tanker truck.

Tofte Fire Chief Rich Nelson received notice on February 4 that the Tofte Volunteer Fire Department would be receiving a grant of $156,988 from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. The grant funding will be used to purchase a new tanker truck.

Nelson said the fire department has already been contacted by a number of vendors who sell tanker trucks. The fire department will be purchasing a tactical tender with a 500-gallon permanent pump and a 2,000-gallon water tank.

The new tanker will be replacing an aging tanker that came to the department as a converted milk truck. Nelson said the new truck will be much easier to drive.

Nelson expressed appreciation to grant writer Scott Dane who worked with Louise Trachta of the Tofte department on the grant.

The AFG program is administered by the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency and is a component of the larger, coordinated effort to strengthen the nation’s overall level of preparedness and ability to respond to fire and related hazards.

Grants totaling $1,444,938 went to 21 communities across the state as part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.
