Three decades after the idea of forming a statewide anti-poaching program was proposed, the Minnesota TIP program is going strong as it prepares for a new hunting season.
Before TIP was formed, not very much was happening to combat “game thieves.”
The Turn In Poachers (TIP) program was officially formed on Sept. 1, 1981 as the result of action at the Central Conservation Association’s annual meeting a decade earlier in Perham. It was the first major sportsmen’s organization to pass a resolution that it and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), as well as other sportsmen’s organizations, agreed on to set up a program to help curtail poaching of game and fish throughout the state.
The Long Range Planning Committee decided after many hours of meetings that Turn in Poachers should be a non-profit statewide organization. TIP now has a full-time executive director to run the corporation and a board of directors. It gets its funds from banquets, sale
of prints, donations, and membership
fees.
TIP pays rewards for tips on illegal poaching of game and fish. TIP has a toll-free number for reporting illegal poaching of game and fish: (800) 652- 9093 or dial #TIP on your cell phone).
The organization today is comprised of private citizens and outdoorsmen who are working toward the elimination of the illegal taking of any game, non-game, or fish species in the state of Minnesota.
Organizers say Turn In Poachers has been a very successful program for Minnesota, and the Central Conservation Association wants to thank all of the sportsmen who have helped make the program such a great success in Minnesota.
