History will come alive during the second week in August during Grand Portage Rendezvous Days Celebration Pow-Wow.

Re-enactors from across the U.S. and Canada gather at the Grand Portage Monument Heritage Center (old fur trading fort), some dressed in 1790’s regalia, where the re-enactors will display skills from the time of the voyageurs and challenge each other in games and skills from the historical past.

Just up the hill from the fort is the Rendezvous Days Pow-Wow, sponsored by the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe). The pow-wow will feature traditional foods, music, craft stands, and sporting events. Last year more than 350 dancers participated in the celebration pow-wow.

The annual gathering is the community’s biggest and most grand celebration of the year, a time when Grand Portage comes alive and reflects on its rich heritage.

Both events are held concurrently and provide a vibrant weekend of family fun.

Visitors can expect a weekend packed with cultural events from the 1800s to 1900s, including an authentic Native American pow-wow, with Stonebridge singers and drumming, as well as chances to try blacksmithing, arts and crafts, Native American cuisine, and recreational activities.

The events start on Friday, Aug. 10 and run through Sunday, Aug. 12. Friday things begin at 10 a.m. and run until 7 p.m. Saturday hours are 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
