Grand Portage Rendezvous Days is coming soon. Starting on Friday, August 12, the sound of the drum will echo from the PowWow grounds, the crack of the bat will be heard at the ball field, and the smell of campfires at the historic encampment will be in the air. There is something for everyone at Grand Portage Rendezvous Days.
Visit the Grand Portage PowWow to see the dignified flag raising, grand entries, powerful dancing and the selection of Grand Portage royalty. Enjoy delicious Indian Tacos, Strawberry Shortcake, and more. Check out the beautiful crafts for sale and visit the Veterans Tent. And take a chance at the raffle with its $1,500 grand prize.
At the Grand Portage National Monument, visitors can take a step back in history, to see how the native Ojibwe, voyageurs, agents, and North West Company partners interacted in 1797. As always there are interesting workshops. New this year is 18th Century Puppets, with a performance at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 14. There are some new games to go along with the Rugged and Dainty Voyageur contests—visitors can learn to play Boules, join in a historic dice game, or try a traditional game called “Run and Scream,” in which players do just that—run and scream for as long as they can. Meet at the front yard of the Great Hall for that contest.
The stockade, reconstructed buildings and historic encampment are open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stop by the Grand Portage Heritage Center for a full schedule of events for the national monument. The Heritage Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
And of course, Rendezvous Days offers some thoroughly modern events, such as the Old Timer’s Softball game, the mixed softball tournament, the Walk-Run, and dancing at the Grand Portage Lodge & Casino on Saturday night to Chris Krienke and Straw Dog.
See you at the Rendezvous!
