Two cars collided on Highway 61 when one vehicle slowed to pass another car already in the ditch in Lutsen on Thursday, February 13, resulting in serious injuries to a passenger in one of the vehicles.
The first vehicle, which was not involved in the crash, was a 2003 Crown Victoria, owned by Louise Abelon of Lutsen. Abelon’s car slid into the ditch on the north side of Highway 61 a few moments before the other vehicles came by.
Heading west and approaching the car in the ditch just before the 40 mph zone near Cascade River, Darcy Hagberg, 74, of Thunder Bay, Ontario, slowed down in his 2011 Chevy pick-up. Following him was Ayman Emam-Hass Hassan, 51, of Thunder Bay in his 2012 Mercedes-Benz GK3.
Apparently when Hassan used his brake, the Mercedes spun and the right passenger side door hit the left rear of the pick-up. Hassan’s passenger, his wife Gylan Dissorouki, 52, also of Thunder Bay, was trapped inside the vehicle.
Lutsen Fire Department and First Responders responded and called for assistance from the Grand Marais Fire Department in extracting Dissorouki from the vehicle. She was transported to Cook County North Shore Hospital and later transported to a Thunder Bay hospital. No information on her condition was available at press time.
None of the others involved in the accident suffered injury. All were wearing seatbelts. According to Minnesota State Patrol Trooper Chris Thostenson, both vehicles suffered significant damage.
The accident is still under investigation, but no citations have been issued at this time.
