On the evening of April 5, 2015 the Cook County Sheriff ’s Office received a call from a Thunder Bay woman reporting that her adult daughter had not returned home as expected after a day of snowboarding at Lutsen Mountains. The next day her daughter, Andrea Matyuska, 32, also of Thunder Bay, was found deceased on the Moose Access trail at Lutsen Mountains.
According to Cook County Law Enforcement, the search was not launched immediately due to the terrain and the size of the search area. It would not have been safe to have individuals searching in the dark.
Cook County Sheriff Deputies responded to the ski hill and located Matyuska’s vehicle. They left a note for her to contact them if she came back to her car. They checked all the local resorts and lodging facilities to see if she had reserved or checked into a room somewhere.
Grooming staff was alerted to be on the lookout for a missing individual.
Sheriff Deputies and Cook County Search and Rescue arrived at the ski hill to develop a search plan at 7:15 a.m. to find that the Lutsen Ski Patrol had discovered Matyuska’s body at 7:10 a.m. on the Moose Access trail, an intermediate level ski run that goes from Bridge Run to the base of Moose Mountain (below Caribou Highlands Resort). She was found in a wooded area approximately 15 feet below the trail.
This matter is under investigation, but no criminal conduct is suspected to have occurred at this time. An autopsy will be performed in the United States.
Charles Skinner, co-president of Lutsen Mountains said, “Our entire staff is extremely saddened by this incident, and we extend our hearts and condolences to the family and friends of Andrea, and the entire Thunder Bay ski and snowboard community.”
