Thunder Bay Marathon cancelled after 5 years

Local long distance runners will be saddened to learn that the Thunder Bay Marathon—Miles with the Giant, normally held September 27 has been called off.

Begun five years ago, the event also included a half-marathon, 5-person relay and 5k family fun run.

The volunteer board of directors said a lack of participation was the main reason for cancelling the races. It was hoped the running events would grow to include 1,500 to 2,000 people but race registration stagnated at 950 over the last three years. A lack of corporate sponsorship money was also another reason cited as a reason to cancel.

Many North Shore runners liked the Thunder Bay Marathon because it was a smaller venue than the Twin Cities Marathon that is held in early October.
