Viking Alpine head ski Coach Charles Lamb was thrilled for three skiers who qualified for the state Alpine meet that will be held next Wednesday.

The kids qualified at the Section 7 meet held at Giants Ridge on Tuesday, February 4.

Mason McKeever placed 9th and Ray Dressley 16th to qualify in the Section 7 boys’ field, and Halle Lamb placed 10th in the girls’ field to earn a trip as individuals for the state meet.

“The boys’ team took third place out of 24 teams,” said Lamb. “Stillwater won the boys’ and girls’ team titles. Duluth East girls were second in the sections and Chisago Lakes boys finished second in the boys’ section. The top two teams qualify for state.”

Duluth East’s Bren Ecklund led the Northland boys with a sixth place finish.

Lauren Carlson, Duluth East, led area girls by taking fourth place at sections.

Only five boys and five girls from the northern section of the state qualified for next week’s state meet.

Just an eighth grader, Ray Dressley showed great form and skill during his two runs at sections, ending his day with a 16th place finish and a ticket to the big show with his teammate, Masen.

Adam Gaertner of Stillwater won the boys’ race, skiing his two runs in 1:12:70.

Kristen Anderson, Stillwater, took the girls’ section crown with a two-run combined time of 1:15.9, nearly three seconds ahead of second place.

“Our kids really stepped up,” said Coach Lamb. “There were 118 girls and 113 boys in the field. Our boys’ team was 32 points behind Chisago Lakes. It’s a long way back, but it’s still pretty remarkable for our boys. Some teams came up short. Our kids came up big. I’m really proud of their effort.”
