At the Sub-Section Track meet on Wednesday, May 21 many of our Cook County Vikings track and field athletes were ready to give their all. The goal was to try and get as many as possible in to the section meet. We had three individuals advance— 8th grader Maya McHugh in the 3200m run with a time of 13:35; 9th grader Molly Thomas in the 400m dash with a time of 65.52 and 7th grader, Sophie Eliasen in the 200m dash with a time of 29.33. These young girls will go on to the section meet on Thursday, May 29 at UMD. We also had many other great moments where the kids saw the fruits of their labor during the season.
Alicia Smith improved her discus throw by 10 feet and threw it 61-07. She was followed by teammate Lucy Callender with a throw of 47-10. Lynden Blomberg improved his discus throw by 5 feet with a throw of 40 feet.
Our girls’ 4×200 meter relay team of Anna Carman, Maya McHugh, Molly Thomas, and Sophie Eliasen cut another 4 seconds off their time and came in 6th place! This team has been fun to watch throughout the season.
Our girls’ 4×800 team (Morgan Weyrens- Welch, Marin Hay, Alyssa Martinson, and Matea Acero) also shaved off time and came in 7th with a time of 11:12.
Amelia Roth ran her best 800 with a time of 3:18; she also improved by another second in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 1:13. She was led by teammate Linnea Henrikson who also shaved off another two seconds with a time of 1:02. Also, in the 800m run was Marin Hay coming in 15th with a time of 2:56 and Alyssa Martinson in 17th with a time of 2:56.
Matea Acero (13:57) and Joey Chmelik (11:38) both had strong races in the twomile. They both just missed making it on to the section meet.
In the mile Morgan Weyrens-Welch came in 21st with a time of 6:49 and Julia Larsen set a new “PR” with a time of 7:42.
Cy Fortunato came in to win his heat of the 200m dash with a time of 26.83, he came in 16th overall. Cy also ran the 400, came in 13th with a time of 60.47. He was followed by Will Lamb with an improved time of 1:01.57 and Jack Haussner with a time of 1:17.53.
Roman Schnobrich had a breakthrough race on his open 800 with a time of 2:36. He was followed by Jack Viren with a time of 2:59 and Lynden Blomberg with a time of 3:22. Jerod Spry also set a new personal record for the season in his 300m-hurdle event with a time of 53.39.
Our boys’ 4×800 meter relay team—Leif Anderson, Roman Schnobrich, Finn Garry, and Will Ramberg— finished in 8th place with a time of 10:49. This group has really worked hard on their hand offs and has improved their strategy of the 800.
This next week we wrap up the season at the section meet. It will be fun to watch this young team grow and develop in the years to come.
