The Polar League recently announced its 2013 boys’ and girls’ cross country All-Conference teams, and three Vikings were named.

For the boys’ team, Joey Chmelik, a senior from Grand Marais, and Kiviok Hight, an eighth-grader from Two Harbors, were named to the All-Conference team.

While most of the Viking runners live in Cook County, several kids from Two Harbors run for the Vikings because their school doesn’t have a cross country team.

Maybe the biggest award the Cook County/Two Harbors boys’ and girls’ teams received was being awarded Section 7A Gold Standards for academics. The girls received Gold Standard certification for having a cumulative GPA of 3.89 and the boys received a Gold Standard for posting a GPA of 3.94 out of a possible 4.0 standard (A average).

Head cross country coach April Wahlstrom said the awards were based on the GPAs of the top five runners on each boys’ and girls’ team. “This is an awesome accomplishment,” Coach Wahlstrom said.
