Thomas Martin Hicks


 

 

Thomas Martin Hicks, of Grand Marais, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2020, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth after a brief but fierce battle with heart disease. He was 66 years old.

Tom was born on April 11, 1954, in Tracy, Minnesota, to Donald and Janet (Strebel) Hicks. He graduated from Tracy High School in 1972. He then attended Worthington Community College and Southwest Minnesota State University.

Tom lived most of his adult life in Grand Marais, Minnesota. He was a cook at Lutsen Resort for 43 years. He also cooked part-time at the American Legion Post 413 in Grand Marais. Tom was a quiet, humble man who loved his North Shore life. He was an active member in the Grand Marais Sons of the American Legion for the past 17 years. He volunteered for numerous community events and fundraisers including the Bingo tent. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. Over the years, he also enjoyed square dancing, fishing, downhill skiing, snowmobiling, putting together jigsaw puzzles, watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, and playing trivia at the American Legion.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, infant niece Janet Schultz, and step-sister-in-law Kimby Daniels.

He is survived by his step-mother Olga Mae Hicks; sisters Sarah (James) Hicks, Mary (John) Trawick, and Naomi (Michael) Schultz; stepbrother Steve Daniels and step-sister Laurel (Bob) Kindler; his nieces and nephews Trevor (Kayla) Hicks, Douglas Trawick, Erin Trawick, Laura Schultz and Karl Schultz; great-nieces Rylan and Parker Hicks; step-nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends. He will be greatly missed by all.

In keeping with Tom’s wishes, no funeral services will be held, but we know Tom would appreciate donations in his memory to the Grand Marais Food Shelf AEOA, PO Box 95, Grand Marais, Minnesota, 55604.
