Thomas J. Cummings


 

 

Thomas J. Cummings, 86, of Tofte, died Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at the Benedictine Health Center in Duluth.

Tom was born on August 10, 1935 in Walker, Minnesota, along with his twin sister, Patricia, to Ray E. and Bernice E. (O’Morrow) Cummings. Tom grew up in Lutsen, and graduated from Cook County High School in 1954, where he was very active in sports as a member of the football and ski teams. After high school, he traveled to Alaska where he joined the Air National Guard and was stationed in Anchorage for two years as a civilian supply officer. After attending St. Cloud State in 1958, he returned to Lutsen and went to work for Erie Mining Company at Taconite Harbor, where he retired as a foreman after 38 years.

Tom married Virginia “Ginger” Swenson in 1961, and built their family home in Tofte, where they raised two daughters. He enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, and time at his cabin on Clara Lake. He and Ginger enjoyed traveling, and winters in Florida and Arizona. Tom was also an amazing caregiver for Ginger.

Tom was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 60 years, Ginger, last year; his parents; a brother, Ray “Jack” Cummings Jr.; and sisters, Eileen Lawson and Mary Ann Sparks.

He is survived by his daughters, Kim Blomberg (Tim Schliep) and Karmen (David) Lockwood; grandchildren, Robert Blomberg and Kali Blomberg; great-granddaughters, Ashtyn and Brooklyn Nelson; a sister Patricia (Richard) Husby; and nieces and nephews.
