Although many younger Fisherman’s Picnic visitors may think that local folk singer Michael Monroe was the songwriter who penned the Fishburger Song, it was actually authored by Grand Marais Lion Ray From in the Fishburger stand many years ago.
In fact, when a newspaper reporter incorrectly attributed the song to Monroe, he was quick to set the record straight that it was From who deserved the credit. Monroe wrote, “It was after having heard him repeat them year after year, that I was inspired to put his words to music by creating a reggae melody on guitar from the stage. It is great fun to be part of the Fisherman’s Picnic each year and to bring out his fishburger lines during that special time of year in Grand Marais.”
The Grand Marais Lions Club would love to hear YOUR version of the Fishburger Song. Grab your friends and your musical instruments and start practicing. The Lions are challenging local bands to come up with their own version of the Fishburger Song, using From’s lyrics but their own melody.
Want to sing a country flavored Fishburger Song? Jazz it up? Sing it soft and low bluegrass style? How about a head banging rock ‘n roll version?
Any band that accepts the challenge will have the chance to have their version of the Fishburger Song recorded on a special Fisherman’s Picnic CD, along with From’s original tune and Michael Monroe’s reggae interpretation. The Lions plan to have the CDs available for purchase for Fisherman’s Picnic 2010.

In the meantime, the Lions invite anyone who would like to get on stage throughout the event this year to sing their version of the Fishburger Song to help the Lions promote their delicious fishburgers.
