There’s more to the Gunflint Trail Canoe Races than races!

The 40th “Running of the Races” on the Gunflint Trail will take place Wednesday, July 19 beginning at 4 p.m. at the Gunflint Lodge on Gunflint Lake, about 45 miles up the Trail.

In addition to Races for most ages and skills, this year’s event will feature a Tug-of-War with eight local teams pulling from two canoes. The watching will be as fun as the tugging. The grand prize? Bragging rights!

The Gunflint Trail Canoe Races have raised funds for local causes since 1976. All funds raised this year will support the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department.

This year’s event also includes a silent and live auction. Live auction prizes include a cruise for six on the Hjordis schooner from North House Folk School and a spectacular wildflower quilt. There are many more donated items in the silent auction, plus raffles for a kayak and a host of prizes from businesses up and down the Trail and in Grand Marais.
