There might be a better way for the Rec Park to take reservations

I have no stake in the way business is conducted at the Grand Marais Recreational Park. And overall it seems they do a great job. But I have to wonder about the way reservations are taken for the week of Fisherman’s Picnic? I do believe that the current system is unfair and overlooks additional revenue for the village.

Consider allowing people to make reservations as much as a year ahead of the upcoming Picnic. Require a minimum number of nights to stay. Require a substantial deposit ($100 or more) with half of that being non-refundable. If cancellation is made one week before the Picnic or later, the entire $100 would be non-refundable. (This is a common practice at many public and private rec parks/campgrounds.)

This would allow people to have a verified reservation well in advance. This would prevent back-up reservations being made at local hotels/cabins. Prior to the beginning of the year, available spaces could be posted. This would alleviate or at least minimize the current anxiety that must be felt by both patrons and employees.

Fisherman’s Picnic is a grand celebration for the community — both past and present, a vehicle for family and class reunions, and a great time to meet, re-meet and connect with lots of people! Any ways that can help establish a safe and positive experience for all involved has got to be endorsed. Please volunteer to help the Lions and Lady Lions so that they too can have some time to enjoy.
